First Spring Motorcycle Ride of 2015

vlcsnap-2015-03-08-22h03m05s173

The weather is finally starting to warm up here! We had temperatures in the high 40sF today, and the sun was shinning bright. It is hard to believe it was –16F just a few days ago. Oh how Minnesota weather changes. It was really beautiful outside. It felt good to get on the motorcycle again after such a long absence.

I checked over the SV650 making sure it was ready to ride. Checked the tires, the chain, brakes, horn, and lights. All that good stuff they tell you to check in the MSF classes I teach. Hah!

My girlfriend, Laura, came with. She is still wearing some of my spare riding pants/coat until she finds things that fit her. She found nice Sidi boots online last week for $50!

We started out in a church parking lot while I practiced swerving, braking, and some other basic skills to clean out the cobwebs.

We toured around Saint Paul visiting lots of the park and lakes. The sky was just so blue and it wasn’t very cold. We both wanted to just keep riding! We put nearly 40 miles on in just under two and half hours. We weren’t in any big rush. It was a good day to enjoy the scenery. We both had fun.

There were lots of other people out enjoying the scenery as well.

We even managed to see a couple other riders out there. Two motorcyclists and one scooter. The second motorcyclist waved, the first one below didn’t.

It is nice to see motorcycles out again. I am hoping to ride to work this week as well!

Is your motorcycle ready for Spring? Did you get a ride in this weekend?

PS: I am posting my India trip very soon. The posts have been written and will be appearing on the blog later this week.

Giving Rides

keith on ural

I enjoy giving rides on the different bikes. “You mean I get to ride a motorcycle and make someone else happy at the same time?” Awesome. I’ve had my wife on the back of many different bikes for a few thousand miles, and given rides to several others with the Ural and R1150GS. I love riding: 1-up, 2-up, 3-up, and once 4-up. It’s all good!

Playing with my WR250R Off-road

Playing with my WR250R off-road

I finally had the chance to get play off-road this year. Yes, I know I rode my Ural on many frozen lakes which is also off-road, but that was three wheels. It was nice to get out in the forest on a bike. I quickly realized two things. One, I am out of shape and was out of breath way to fast. Two, I am way out of practice which caused number one.

I wasn’t very efficient or relaxed at first. After a few minutes of riding standing up, I became more relaxed. I still wasn’t very efficient which contributed greatly to getting tired too quickly!

I was wearing my Alpinestars S-MX Bionic armor underneath my Tourmaster coat (with the armor removed). I think after I get to the forest next time, I will find a way to strap my road-coat to the back of the bike, maybe with a bungee net. I got pretty overheated even though I had all my vents open and it was only 75F.

There was a lot of water around, and many of the trails were under water.

I rode for about an hour, and then I headed home exhausted with a big grin.

I acquired a bunch of mud, so I gave the WR its first bath of the year too.
